Local Sports For those with an interest in sports, Fairbanks can lay claim to quite a few sports teams.  College basketball is a hallmark of Fairbanks sports.  The Carlson Center is home to the University of Alaska Fairbanks athletic team known as the Nanooks (which is a male polar bear).  In addition, it's home to the Top of the World pre-season college basketball tournament.  As of Spring, 2008, it has also been designated as the home of the Fairbanks Grizzlies, which is a pro arena football team in the Indoor Football League. You'll also find hockey galore!  A junior hockey team in the North American Hockey League, the Fairbanks Ice Dogs, makes their home at the Big Dipper Ice Arena where they play on a regular basis.  There are several summer collegiate baseball teams that make their home in Fairbanks as well.  You'll find the Alaska Goldpanners and the Fairbanks AIA Fire playing games at Growden Memorial Park.  The Midnight Sun game is a staple here, and has been an annual tradition of Fairbanksians since 1906.  What makes this event special is that it's played without artificial lighting starting at 11:00 p.m. on the summer solstice!! Hutchison High School is also known as the home of the 2009 Alaska basketball champions! Local Schools The Fairbanks North Star Borough School district has a student enrollment of slightly over 14,000.  There are both public and private schools.  Most private schools are run by religious organizations (e.g. private Catholic schools).  The primary school district of Fairbanks is the Fairbanks North Star Borough School district.  Their individual student enrollment number inches slightly past 14,000. Local Health Care There are quite a few hospitals within the Fairbanks city limits.  These hospitals include Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, Interior Community Health Center, Chief Andrew Isaac Health Center, and Bassett Army Community Hospital (Fort Wainwright).  These hospitals are qualified acute-care facilities and support state-certificate Medevac services.  There are several hospitals that provide specialized care, however.  They include the FNA Regional Center for Alcohol and other Addictions.  For long term care, you'll find the Fairbanks Pioneers' Home and the Denali Center.
